Support The Women's Center
We invite you to join us in making a difference in the lives of more than 100,000 poor families and women working to achieve economic security in New York City.
Work alone does not always create the path for families to escape poverty. In New York City, hundreds of thousands of families work hard yet do not earn enough to meet their basic expenses. Too often, these hard-working families, many headed by women of color, are forced to make tough and often unhealthy decisions such as going hungry, living in overcrowded housing, relying on substandard child care, and living without health insurance.
In operation for 40 years, The Women's Center for Education and Career Advancement offers direct services to help low-income women bridge the gap between earnings and expenses. We also offer non-profit organizations free training, providing the tools and information they need to help clients access crucial work support and benefit programs (i.e. food stamps, tax credits etc.).
The tools we developed through our work, the Self-Sufficiency Calculator and the Self-Sufficiency Standard, have helped policy makers and advocates better understand the realities faced by families living in New York City. These tools have also simplified the process for determining eligibility for public benefit programs, which are too often underutilized.
Why is our work so important?
- Our efforts have generated an estimated $360 million to $780 million each year in benefit and work support income for 100,000+ working poor families in New York City.
- Our training has empowered more than 1,600 caseworkers and family assistance counselors, helping them to complete an eligibility determination in just 15 minutes, work that use to take many hours.
- Our work has helped frame and broaden the dialogue on anti-poverty policy and programs in New York City.
With your help, we can continue to provide much-needed services to working poor women and families and to the agencies that serve them. Investing in the Women's Center is an investment in women, children and families that will pay off in stronger communities and a better economic future for our City. Please join us in making it possible for more New Yorkers to move their families out of poverty and closer to economic security in 2010.
